IBBT is participating in no less than seven of the new projects approved in the second wave of the European FIRE initiative (Future Internet Research and Experimentation), combining experimentally driven research and a number of test facilities. IBBT's participation in these projects is accountable for 5% of the total budget of this second wave, with a heavy involvement of the iLabs in each of them. The recent financial crisis had led both government and industry to reduce investments in research & development, while the challenges ahead require an extensive effort. We are therefore in the middle of a reorganization to streamline our operations and reduce the overhead costs. Through various institutions and funds, the government subsidizes the research of innovative ideas and the development of prototypes. Once a product is "market-ready", businesses take over and fund large-scale production. But what institution bridges the gap between the prototype and the ready-made product?
