Encounters with Europe and South Korea

Last week, the European Commission organized its ICT2013 conference. The event attracted about 4,000 researchers and IT professionals from all over Europe – and beyond. As Lithuania is currently holding the European Union’s presidency, the event was held in Vilnius, capital of Lithuania. It was quite amazing to see a beautiful, baroque town temporarily invaded by nerds and techies from all over Europe! Read more...

Google, Cisco (and the NSA)

Last week included a number of encounters with large US corporations. On Tuesday, Vint Cerf - co-founder of the Internet and strategic advisor to Google - came to Ghent to visit the university, which has participated to the successful Google Books Library project over the last couple of years, digitizing 240.000 rare books from its impressive collection. Vint also gave a lecture at a local theatre, attracting a crowd of IT professionals and students, and answering questions from the public. He turned out to be not only smart – you wouldn’t expect otherwise from the person who came up with the Internet protocol - but also very well-dressed, likeable and entertaining.  Read more...

Last week, I had the opportunity to explain the De Krook - ‘library of the future’ - project to the new King and Queen of Belgium upon the occasion of their first visit to Ghent.
