Lieven Danneels Appointed as iMinds’ New Chairman

Ghent – May 28, 2015. The iMinds Board of Directors has appointed Lieven Danneels – current Vice Chairman – as new iMinds Chairman. By appointing Lieven Danneels to this role, the board members clearly steer the path of continuity and experience.

Lieven Danneels knows iMinds to the core: he has been a member of the Board of Directors since 2007, and has been acting as Vice-Chairman since December 2010. Moreover, his role as CEO at Televic has armed him with tons of business experience – a major asset for an organization that puts the emphasis on exchange between academia, business players and the government.

“I really look forward to taking on this prominent role,” Lieven Danneels says. “Over the past years, iMinds has definitely proven its added value, and that is exactly what I wish to extend. My two keystones will be a strong focus on the economic and societal value creation and generating impact of our institute on the one hand, and on further profiling iMinds in the domains where our expertise is internationally acclaimed.”

As the new Chairman, Lieven Danneels succeeds Bart Becks who stepped down as Chairman last February. During his chairmanship, Bart – together with the management team – overlooked the transition of IBBT into iMinds. More than just a new name, the transition also brought about a change of culture – putting extra weight to innovation and venturing, and on digital innovation in general. Also, the internationalization of iMinds’ activities made its mark – shifting from growth in Flanders towards growth for Flanders. In the coming years, Bart Becks will focus on a number of new projects. Next to extending the platform for start-up funding, he will develop a European Venture builder – in partnership with Jan Vorstermans (former Telenet COO) and Brendon Grunewald.

The Board of Directors has also decided to appoint iMinds’ COO Danny Goderis as acting CEO – in light of the resignation of Wim De Waele. Being one of iMinds’ founding fathers in 2004, Wim has transformed iMinds into a widely recognized player in the digital innovation landscape. He recently announced a career change after 11 fulfilling years on board. Wim will partner with Jurgen Ingels (former Clear2Pay CFO) to build a European ecosystem for technology companies and the FinTech sector in particular.

In the coming months, the iMinds Board of Directors will focus on preparing the new covenant with the Flemish government and on iMinds’ growth strategy. The search for a new iMinds CEO will start subsequently.

The iMinds Board of Directors and staff sincerely wish to thank Bart Becks and Wim De Waele for their dedication and results over the past years, and wish them all the best.
